Johannesburg Water and City Power are continuing with their operation to disconnect residential buildings in the Central Business District (CBD) that have illegally connected to water and electricity infrastructure.

The entities are targeting several hijacked buildings in the inner city.

Joburg Water spokesperson Nomusa Shabalala says this is part of efforts to deal with water losses which also impacts on the utility’s revenue.

She says ageing infrastructure is also to blame.

Shabalala says they are exploring public-private partnerships with National Treasury to ensure adequate funding for the ageing infrastructure that we have in the city.

“There are technical assessments that are done from time to time. So, we are able to pick up if there are any illegal connections. How we picked up in this building was an excessive leakage and that did raise an alarm, and we picked up that they had reconnected themselves illegally.”
